 Many verbs ordinarily transitive may be used
absolutely, having their natural object in the ablative with dé (§/273. N. 2): -  
-  priusquam Pompónius dé
êius adventú cógnósceret (B.  C.  iii.  101), before Pomponius could learn of his coming.  [Cf.  êius
advent=u c=ognit=o, his arrival being discovered.]
